The White House announced that U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping plan to hold a phone call in the coming weeks.

Politico reported the White House issued a press release detailing the outcome of the meeting between National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

The White House also mentioned that Sullivan and Wang discussed the following steps to combat the flow of illegal synthetic drugs, continue the repatriation of illegal immigrants, and enhance cooperation in law enforcement. They highlighted the need for concrete actions to address the climate crisis.

On trade disputes, the White House reported that Sullivan stressed the U.S. would take necessary measures to prevent advanced American technology from being used in ways that undermine national security while ensuring that these actions don’t unfairly restrict trade or investment. He further raised concerns about China’s unfair trade policies and non-market economic practices, reiterating that resolving the cases of American citizens unjustly detained or prevented from leaving China remains a top priority.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry also released a separate press statement on the talks, in which Wang reiterated that Taiwan belongs to China and that reunification is inevitable. Wang urged the U.S. to honor its commitment not to support Taiwan independence and to support China’s peaceful reunification.

Furthermore, Wang stressed the importance of comprehensive and shared national security among nations, arguing that national security should not come at the expense of countries’ stability. He added that economic security should have clear, scientifically defined boundaries.
