Jimmy Carter Turns 100: Celebrating a Century of Impact and Resilience

inews24 Views

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter is set to celebrate his 100th birthday on October 1.

Born on October 1, 1924, Carter will mark his 100th birthday at his home in Plains, Georgia.

He has been receiving hospice care at home since February, following his decision to discontinue hospital treatment after melanoma, a type of skin cancer, spread to his liver and brain.

He also experienced the loss of his lifelong partner, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away at the age of 96 on November 19 last year.

Carter, the 39th president of the United States, is the longest-living president in U.S. history, surpassing even George Washington.

Only four other U.S. presidents have lived beyond the age of 90: John Adams (who died at 90), Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush, all of whom passed away at 93.

Carter actively served as a peace envoy, contributing to various initiatives, including the Habitat for Humanity movement, U.S.-North Korea relations, and the Bosnia crisis. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

His relationship with South Korea was marked by tension over his proposal to withdraw U.S. troops from the country. During his 1976 presidential campaign, Carter pledged a phased withdrawal of U.S. forces stationed in South Korea. Although this withdrawal was never implemented, it caused friction in U.S.-South Korea relations during his administration.

According to the Associated Press (AP), Carter’s grandson, Jason Carter, mentioned that one of the reasons his grandfather continues to persevere is his desire to witness history, with Vice President Kamala Harris—also a Democrat like Carter—possibly becoming the first female U.S. president and the first president of Asian heritage (her mother is from India).
