The Ukrainian military recently protested Google, claiming that an update on Google Maps exposed the locations of secret military facilities.
According to the Kyiv Independent, Andriy Kovalenko, head of the disinformation-countering branch of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), stated on Sunday that “Google’s free online map, Google Maps, displayed the locations of Ukrainian weapon systems in recently updated images.”
Following the spread of this information online, Kovalenko reported that a Google representative had contacted Ukrainian authorities, pledging to address the issue.
“We previously attempted to contact Google (based in the U.S.) to address the problem promptly, but we did not receive an immediate response,” he said, adding, “We will seek ways to address similar issues swiftly if they arise in the future.”
Kovalenko did not disclose specifics about which Ukrainian military facilities were exposed on Google Maps.
However, it has been reported that Russian media and military bloggers have already captured and shared these images, referring to them as the new air defense system surrounding Kyiv Airport.
