US Calls Out Russia’s ‘Irresponsible’ Nuclear Doctrine Amid Rising Tensions

The United States and Ukraine have jointly condemned Russia’s recent revision of its nuclear doctrine.

According to AP News, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller addressed the issue on Tuesday, stating that Russia’s signals about revising its nuclear doctrine are “extremely irresponsible.” He emphasized that this behavior is aimed at coercing and threatening nations worldwide, adding that such an approach will not enhance Russia’s security.

Miller further commented that Russia’s announcement of a revised nuclear doctrine, while regrettable, was not surprising. He emphasized that the U.S. would not alter its nuclear posture in response and continued to urge Russia to cease its “irresponsible rhetoric” immediately.

In a related development at the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) in Washington, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha‎ reaffirmed Ukraine’s resolve in the face of Russian nuclear threats. Sybiha declared that Russia’s revision of its nuclear weapon usage rules was merely an intimidation tactic and stressed that Ukraine remains steadfast, undeterred by the threats of nuclear weapon use.

This diplomatic exchange follows the U.S. decision to allow Ukraine to employ American-made ATACMS long-range missiles against Russian territory. In apparent retaliation, Russia announced a new nuclear doctrine that lowers the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons.
