The Biden administration recently announced plans to double tariffs on Chinese solar wafers and polysilicon materials by 2025.

According to The Verge, starting January 1, 2025, the U.S. will significantly increase tariffs on Chinese solar wafers, polysilicon, and certain tungsten products. Specifically, tariffs on polysilicon and solar wafers will rise from 25% to 50%, while tariffs on certain tungsten products used to manufacture weapons and computer chips will increase from 0% to 25%.

This measure is part of plans to bolster domestic clean energy supply chains. Chinese firms produce over 75% of the world’s polysilicon, and China controls more than 80% of global production capacity when considering all stages of solar panel manufacturing, including polysilicon and wafers.

U.S. manufacturers welcome this new plan. Mike Carr, Executive Director of Solar Energy Manufacturers for America (SEMA), described the trade measure as “a step in the right direction” to counter China’s widespread government subsidies in solar manufacturing.
