A tragic incident unfolded in Nigeria as a military fighter jet, engaged in operations against an Islamist extremist group, mistakenly bombed a civilian village, resulting in at least 10 fatalities.

Ahmed Aliyu, the governor of Sokoto State in northwestern Nigeria, confirmed the incident on Thursday, as reported by international news sources, including Reuters. According to Aliyu, the military was conducting operations to neutralize armed criminal groups in the state. During this mission, two villages, Kidan Sama and Lintu, were mistakenly hit. Local government officials and Nigerian military personnel are reportedly planning a joint investigation into the incident.

The armed criminal group that the Nigerian military was targeting in Sokoto State is known as Lakurawa. This organization primarily operates in the northwestern region of the country, near the borders with Niger and Mali. The group is known to have Islamist extremist leanings.
