President Yoon Suk Yeol has received a work report from the Ministry of Unification and instructed them to make efforts to improve North Korean human rights.

After receiving a policy direction report from the Ministry of Unification on the 7th, President Yoon said, “The unification we pursue is based on the universal human value, freedom, and we must move towards expanding the freedom of every North Korean citizen,” according to Minister of Unification Kim Yung-ho at a press briefing held at the Government Complex Seoul on the 8th.

In response to North Korea defining South Korea as an enemy state, the Ministry of Unification reported to President Yoon that it would establish a “new unification vision” reflecting the philosophy of liberalism.

The report is known to specifically include a plan to establish a unification vision based on liberal philosophy, reflecting the North Korean nuclear issue, the human rights situation in North Korea, and changes in the international situation.

Concerning this, President Yoon said, “Unification is not only a matter of inter-Korean relations but also a problem related to the universal human value, freedom, which the international community should achieve together with a responsible attitude,” and “I hope the Ministry of Unification will do its best to improve the human rights of each North Korean citizen.”

Based on this work report, the Ministry of Unification has planned to gather opinions through the 2nd Unification and Future Planning Committee, a ministerial advisory body to be launched on March 15th. The 2nd Unification Future Planning Committee will include North Korean defectors, young people, foreigners, and academic experts.
