Recently, Russian media has reignited the debate on the urgency of South Korea’s independent nuclear armament. China has reportedly carried out a large-scale air raid drill targeting the Korean Peninsula, deploying nuclear bombers. This news has led to growing calls from military experts for South Korea to actively consider its nuclear armament alongside a review of our military’s preparedness.

Russian local media, citing a Russian military expert, reported that China recently appeared to have conducted a missile-firing drill targeting places like Yongsan (the Presidential Office and Ministry of National Defense) in Korea, Osan Base, Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek, Camp Carroll and Camp Henry in Daegu, and Busan, using 16 H-6K (Hong-6) Chinese nuclear bombers that entered the West Sea from two mainland locations.

The ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast) and ATC (Air Traffic Control) aircraft surveillance systems did not detect the drill, and there were no radio records. Therefore, it’s a fact that the general public would never know. Still, military experts are analyzing that China provided this information to Russia, revealing the facts of the drill.

The experts analyzed the background of the drill, saying, “China’s deployment of H-6K bombers for a nuclear missile firing drill targeting the Korean Peninsula is a natural response to the Freedom’s Shield (FS) exercise recently carried out by the South Korea-U.S. combined forces targeting North Korea and China.”
