A tornado struck Guangzhou, China, causing casualties.

On the 28th (local time), according to local media such as Xinhua News Agency, a powerful tornado occurred in Baiyun District, Guangzhou City, China, around 3 pm the previous day.

The tornado’s path was about 1.1 miles long and 919 feet wide, and the maximum wind speed at the weather station in Liangtian Village, located 1.7 miles from the origin, was measured at 46 miles per hour.

News of the tornado spread quickly through social media. The video showed sparks flying from high-voltage power lines before a large explosion and steel structures shot high into the sky.

One Chinese individual who posted the video said, “It felt like the end was near,” and another described the situation in detail, saying, “I was laughing while filming, but my bag flew away,” and “I took refuge under the table, but it was useless.”

The tornado swept through the area for 4 minutes. Despite the short duration, five residents died, 33 were injured, and over 140 buildings were damaged.

Large hailstones that suddenly fell smashed car windows and shattered the glass of outdoor tables, all captured on camera.

Just a week ago, Guangdong Province experienced a flood, the worst in a century, which caused casualties.

Regarding the consecutive natural disasters, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) warned, “The atmospheric instability has increased due to the rise in sea surface temperature, causing the humidity of the South China Sea to rise abnormally. This could continue for the next 2-3 days.”
