South Korea on Edge: Will Russia’s Move Ignite New Cold War Tensions?

Daniel Kim Views

On the 23rd, Chang Ho Jin, Head of the National Security Office, warned, “If Russia supplies North Korea with high-precision weapons, we won’t have many options left.” He also stated, “Our weapon supplies to Ukraine will all depend on how Russia responds in the future.” He emphasized that Russia’s actions will determine Korean-Russian relations.

Chang emphasized that the situation largely depends on Russia, noting that Russia must carefully consider its actions. He explained that they are closely monitoring Russia’s potential moves and are taking the matter seriously. He observed that recent trends in Korean-Russian relations suggest that Russia is approaching a critical threshold. Chang added that Russia has sought to maintain the mutual relationship, hoping to restore it post-war. He reiterated that Russia needs to revise its actions to achieve this.

He did not mention what weapons would be supplied to Ukraine but noted, “Whether it’s lethal or non-lethal weapons, we can create various combinations.” Previously, the government revised the military support plan for Ukraine in response to the military pact between North Korea and Russia. The weapons that can be supplied in Ukraine include the Cheongung medium-range surface-to-air missile (KM-SAM), 155mm artillery shells, and the K600 obstacle-clearing (mine-removal) tank.

Chang also mentioned that the international community will respond to North Korea and Russia’s relations. He explained, “As the issue of military cooperation between Russia and North Korea involves war in Ukraine and security threats to Asia, it is an international issue. It will be discussed at the NATO summit in July.”
