It was recently revealed that an engineer from a prestigious Chinese university proposed to his girlfriend with a concrete ring he made using his self-developed technology.

According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) on Monday, Yao Guoyu, a Ph.D. graduate (PhD) from the civil engineering department of Tsinghua University, one of China’s top universities, publicly proposed to his girlfriend at the university in 2016.

Between 2011 and 2016, Yao attended this university’s doctoral program, where he focused on developing a nano-silicon ion material to enhance building materials’ waterproof quality and lifespan.

The technology he developed began to be adopted in various hydraulic engineering projects and the South-to-North Water Diversion Project, a large-scale waterway conversion project in China.

In 2016, upon graduating from the university, Yao received a gold medal at an invention award ceremony. He then publicly proposed to his girlfriend at this event by giving her a concrete ring he had made using his invented technology.

“The ring suggests that our love will not corrode or degenerate in 100 years,” Yao said.

The Chinese media have recently spotlighted this story topic on social media.

Most people have reacted positively, finding the story romantic. Reports indicate that Yao is currently married to the girlfriend he proposed to at the time.

After graduation, Yao founded Guardex, a company specializing in concrete waterproof materials, in 2017 and became the representative of 15 companies. Notably, his developed products were supplied to the speed skating stadium completed at the end of 2020 for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
