According to a local media report, The Kia Carnival is the first car choice among South Korean parliamentary members.

The Hankook Ilbo secured and analyzed the data on the currently registered vehicles amongst the 22nd National Assembly members in South Korea. According to the results of the analysis,

Kia’s Carnival, including the limousine version, accounted for 185 out of 193 registered vehicles, representing 63.1%.

The Carnival is a large sport utility vehicle in Korea. It is loved for its spacious, comfortable interior, powerful performance, and various safety and convenience features. Originally a minivan style, it successfully transitioned to a large SUV with a new design at its 4th generation launch in 2020.

“The Carnival appears less authoritative than large sedans. Given its spaciousness, it’s easier to change clothes inside the car, which is why lawmakers prefer it,” explained a staff from a lawmaker’s office told the Hankook Ilbo in an interview,

The second most popular car among lawmakers is the Genesis G80, which took up 30 out of 193 registered vehicles. The G80 is a luxury sedan launched by Genesis, a brand under the Hyundai Motor Group. It is widely loved for its sleek and luxurious design.

Following the ranks were the Hyundai Palisade (10 units), Genesis G90 (8 units), and Genesis GV80 (6 units). 34 other cars took up the rest of the proportion.

Lawmakers are not provided with official vehicles and use their personal cars for legislative activities. However, some lawmakers in high-ranking positions, such as the Speaker of the National Assembly, can be provided official vehicles for official duties.

Regardless of car ownership, lawmakers receive a fixed monthly amount for fuel and maintenance costs. This year, the fuel cost is 1.1 million won ($956) per month, and the maintenance cost is 358,000 won ($311).
