China’s COVID-19 Surge: Are We Heading for Another Lockdown?

Daniel Kim Views

The COVID-19 virus shows signs of resurgence in China. As the number of COVID-19 cases rises, the authorities have issued a “COVID Alert.”

The China Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CCDC) reported yesterday that COVID-19 positivity rates have surged from 8.9% in the first week of July to 18.7% in the fourth week. This increase marks the highest rate in nearly four months, following a peak of 21.1% in mid-March.

The CCDC identified the main circulating variants as the JN.1 lineage and the XDV variant, with the XDV variant becoming more prevalent. Experts explain that while XDV does not cause severe fever, it does lead to significant sore throat, generalized weakness, and joint pain.

Zhang Wenhong, Director and Party Branch Secretary of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Huashan Hospital, affiliated with Fudan University, pointed out similar COVID-19 fluctuations are occurring worldwide. The primary causes of the outbreaks in May and June stem from the emergence of viral variants and waning immunity, which tends to happen in a pattern approximately every six months.

The Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases in Guangdong province, rising from 8,246 in June to 18,384 in July—an increase of over 10,000 cases. Experts advise the public to uphold personal hygiene, wear masks, wash hands frequently, avoid crowded places, ensure proper indoor ventilation, and strengthen immunity through a balanced diet. They also recommend seeking medical attention promptly if symptoms appear.
