‘Extreme Job’ Ranked First: Waxers
Suffer from Sexual Harassment and Assault
But the Future Looks Bright

In recent years, waxing studios have been witnessing a surge in popularity, with an increasing number of recurring clients. Despite their substantial earnings, waxing specialists, known as “waxers,” are ranked top professionals in extreme jobs.

Waxers who must acquire a nationally certified skin beautician license due to the hygiene aspect of their work primarily focus on removing body hair using wax or cloth. They perform hair removal services on areas ranging from arms, legs, chests, underarms, and buttocks to the facial area, eyebrows, and hairlines.

These highly skilled waxers can earn an average monthly income of approximately $3,400 to $4,200. Depending on the season and their dedication, they can even rake in a monthly income of about $8,400, making it a high-income profession.

However, waxers must deal with certain drawbacks in their work. They encounter unpleasant odors due to lax genital hygiene, traces of feces, and inadequate aftercare, such as leftover tissue fragments. Moreover, some male customers mistake waxing salons for more explicit establishments, causing awkward situations.

One female waxer bravely revealed her experience on a YouTube channel: “He was a regular customer. I had moved shops a few times, and he followed me. He insisted, ‘You came all the way here, and there’s no service?’ and attempted to make inappropriate demands.”

Despite these challenges, waxing, which initially gained popularity abroad, has become specialized in South Korea, and its future looks promising. Domestic businesses systematically conduct waxing training programs, enhancing their competitiveness with various waxing products and delicate techniques.

Furthermore, recent waxing skill competitions have been held, producing talented individuals. With these developments, the outlook for the waxing industry appears even brighter in the coming years.
