Hyundai Motor Group has risen to second place in the electric vehicle market in the United States, following Tesla. With a market share nearing double digits, expectations for this year’s sales volume are rising.

According to industry sources on the 25th, the ranking of electric vehicle sales in the United States in January of this year was Tesla (48,757 units), Hyundai Motor Group (8,262 units), GM Group (6,546 units), and Ford Group (5,429 units), in that order. The market share of the Hyundai Motor Group was 9.3%.

As of last month, Hyundai Motor Group’s cumulative sales volume was 14,399 units, a 51.9% increase compared to the previous year. The ranking by model was Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 (3,461 units), Kia’s EV9 (2,726 units), Kia’s EV6 (2,522 units), and Hyundai’s Ioniq 6 (1,662 units).

The expansion of the electric vehicle lineup, such as the Ioniq 6, GV70 electric model, and EV9, which were not sold at the beginning of last year, and the effect of the introduction of the new Kona Electric contributed to the increase in sales. In particular, the EV9 has been breaking through 1,000 units in monthly sales for three consecutive months since its full-fledged sales in December last year.

An industry insider said, “The only obstacle for the Hyundai Motor Group is the lack of electric vehicle production in the United States,” and added, “Once the electric vehicle exclusive factory (Meta Plant) starts operation in the fourth quarter of this year, the sales volume of the Hyundai Motor Group is expected to gain more momentum.”

Meanwhile, Hyundai and Kia took eight out of the top 10 spots for fuel efficiency as ranked by U.S. government agencies. Hyundai’s Ioniq 6 was the most fuel-efficient among the 2024 model new cars.

According to Fuel Economy, a fuel-saving information site jointly operated by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Ioniq 6 Long Range rear-wheel-drive model (with 18-inch wheels) that took the top spot for fuel efficiency has a combined fuel economy of 140 MPGe. This figure is five times the average fuel economy (28 MPGe) of 2024 model cars.
