Waiting Time for Xiaomi’s First Electric Car Extends to Seven Months

globalautonews Views

Chinese tech giant Xiaomi’s first electric car, SU7, launched on March 28, is seeing a prolonged waiting period for delivery as the number of orders continues to rise. Customers who order the model now have to wait almost seven months, according to Chinese electric car portal CnEVPost. The outlet reported that the three variations of the model, Standard, Pro, and Max, have wait times of 13-16 weeks, 16-19 weeks, and 25-28 weeks, respectively.

This is not only due to many initial orders but also indicates that Xiaomi’s production capacity is not yet sufficient, the report analyzed.

The company announced at the model launch event that the first deliveries of the custom SU7 models, both the Standard and Max versions, will begin at the end of April and the Pro version at the end of May.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi sells 5,000 Founders limited editions for the SU7 at the same price as the Standard and Max editions. This model has already been produced, and customers cannot adjust the configuration. The company announced that deliveries will start on April 3.

Xiaomi reported that the SU7 received over 10,000 confirmed orders within 4 minutes of starting to take orders, 20,000 orders within 7 minutes, and over 50,000 orders within 27 minutes. On March 29, they added that they received 88,898 confirmed orders within 24 hours after the launch announcement.

Xiaomi EV currently has 59 stores in 29 cities in China. Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s founder, chairman, and CEO, announced at the launch that the company aims to expand to 211 stores covering 39 cities by the end of the year.

Xiaomi EV’s factory is located in Yizhuang, Beijing, and aims to have an annual production capacity of 300,000 units. The factory will be built in two stages, each with a yearly production capacity of 150,000 units.

China Daily reported that Xiaomi’s electric car factory has workshops capable of producing 150,000 units, including die-casting, stamping, body, painting, assembly, and battery.

Xiaomi EV plans to complete the increase in production by mid-2024, and the production volume in July is said to exceed 10,000 units.

Xiaomi announced that the second model, an SUV, could be launched within this year.
