Elon Musk’s X Ventures into Adult Content: Testing NSFW Feature

X (formerly Twitter), a social networking service, is testing a community feature focused on adult content or inappropriate posts that are sexual or violent (Not Safe For Work·NSFW), Bloomberg reported on the 29th.

A researcher from Watchful, an app development tracking company, recently revealed screenshots indicating that X is developing this feature.

According to Watchful, users who create communities within the X app can specify in settings that their group contains “sensitive adult content.”

This then forms an “adult content” label for the group.

Adult content could be filtered out or removed if a label could not be added to the community.

These communities can operate privately. Bloomberg reported that it appears that groups providing adult content would ultimately require age verification.

Currently, X restricts “explicit media, adult nudity, and sexual acts” for users under 18 or those who do not include a birthdate in their profile.

Bloomberg interpreted X’s intention to publicly provide NSFW groups as another strategy to differentiate itself from other social networking services.

Even before Elon Musk acquired and renamed the platform, adult content existed on Twitter.

During the time of Twitter, executives even considered a subscription service in the style of OnlyFans (a platform that supports a monthly payment system by which people can view creators’ works) for adult content creators.

However, Twitter withdrew this after determining that the company was not prepared to crack down on harmful content, including child pornography.

Meanwhile, Musk publicly believes that “X should handle almost all content as long as it’s not illegal.”
