Musk’s Mass Firing Raises Questions About Tesla’s NACS Standard

globalautonews Views

Elon Musk of Tesla has raised the issue of charger standards with existing automakers since last year, after firing the entire Tesla charging team. Ford and Rivian, the first to adopt Tesla’s NACS system, can charge through an adapter for Tesla’s NACS. Following this, they plan to start supporting GM, Volvo, Polestar, and others this spring. However, there may be hitches in the schedule due to the dismissal of Tesla’s entire charging team.

This is understood to have caused Elon Musk to abruptly fire the Head of the Charging Department Rebecca Tinucci and her team solely for the lack of staff adjustment. This is also considered another risk for Tesla’s CEO. According to Electrek, some automakers are having meetings on whether to proceed with the planned NACS transition or withdraw the plan.

It is currently unknown whether standardization to NACS, which was promoted to increase the demand for electric vehicles, will proceed again.

However, since the SAE certification for NACS, also known as J3400, has already been completed, standardization is expected to proceed regardless of Tesla’s internal issues. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International) announced on June 27, 2023, that it would begin the process of officially standardizing Tesla’s NACS (North American Charging Standard). It said this would allow any suppliers or manufacturer to use, manufacture, or distribute NACS connectors in electric vehicles and charging stations across North America. Ford, GM, and Rivian have announced plans to adopt NACS connectors that can share Tesla’s supercharger, adding that the connectors would become less reliant on Tesla.

Meanwhile, Tesla is facing another problem, deciding to suspend operations for four days at the Giga Berlin in Grünheide, Germany, due to environmental activists protesting the factory expansion.
