Meta Indefinitely Postpones AI Chatbot Launch Due to EU Sanctions

The launch of AI on the Meta platform has been postponed due to sanctions posed by the European Union (EU).

Meta announced on the 15th that the launch of the Meta AI chatbot in Europe is delayed after the European regulatory authorities denied their plans to train large language models (LLM) with users’ posts.

Meta expressed its intentions to begin an LLM training program called Rama, using public posts created by European users last Monday. However, the plan was indefinitely postponed when the Irish Data Protection Commission objected to this decision on Friday.

Meta posted on X, “This is a step backward for European innovation, competition in AI development and further delays bringing benefits of AI to people in Europe,” adding, “Simply put, without including local information, we’d only be able to offer people a second-rate experience. This means we aren’t able to launch Meta AI in Europe at the moment.”

A Meta representative confirmed that they still plan to launch in Europe, but did not share an accurate timeline. Large language models support generative AI including chatbots.

Meta is investing a significant amount of resources into AI to keep pace with other tech giants such as Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI.

Last April, the company launched Rama 3, its latest LLM which has been providing the Meta AI assistant to its app users in the United States.
