On June 17, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed his hope to bring Hyundai Motor’s advanced technology, Korean hydrogen trucks, to the U.S., stating, “This could assist in building a green logistics network in the U.S.,” adding, “I believe this is a good example of how the partnership between Georgia and Korean companies can continue.”
Meeting with reporters at the Night of Georgia event held at the Conrad Hotel in Yeouido, Seoul, Kemp expressed his astonishment at Hyundai’s work with hydrogen. He further explained, “What Hyundai is discussing is building an eco-friendly logistics network that moves products using hydrogen,” adding, “Today, we were able to drive the Xcient truck made by Hyundai. This is almost like science fiction in the U.S., but it is exciting to see it in Korea and bring it back.”
Regarding the construction plan for Hyundai’s new plant in Georgia, USA, he stated, “The project is progressing faster than expected,” further explaining, “There is still work to be done, but we are proud of the rapid progress of the project.”
Hyundai is establishing the Hyundai Motor Group Meta Plant America (HMGMA) in Georgia, with operations expected to commence in October 2024. Originally planned as an electric vehicle-only factory, it is now considering the concurrent production of hybrid cars in light of the slowdown in demand for electric vehicles (EVs). In response, Kemp stated, “The mission of Georgia is to support Hyundai’s mission. If Hyundai’s mission is to produce EVs, we will support that, and if the goal is to produce hybrid cars, it is our role to support that.”
Regarding plans to attract additional investments from Korean companies, Kemp showed confidence, stating, “We have great locations and logistics infrastructure such as harbor, rail networks, and Atlanta International Airport,” adding, “We also have a great workforce, making it a good environment for business.”
He emphasized, “Georgia produces a lot of solar energy, so we have secured clean energy. This is what many companies are looking for,” suggesting the possibility of attracting additional investments from Korean companies.
