Bill Gates Funds Next-Gen Wind Power That Could Slash Costs by 25%

theguru Views

Microsoft founder Bill Gates has made a new investment in the wind power technology startup Airloom Energy, continuing his commitment to backing renewable energy companies.

On Thursday, Airloom Energy announced the successful completion of a new funding round, raising $13.75 million. Lower Carbon Capital led the round, which was also participated in by Bill Gates’s Breakthrough Energy Ventures. This marks Breakthrough Energy Ventures’ second investment in Airloom Energy, following an initial investment in November last year.

Airloom Energy is developing next-generation wind power technology, creating a unique system that generates electricity using 10-meter-long vertical blades attached to lightweight tracks rather than the massive turbine blades mounted on tall towers.

The company claims this method not only preserves the natural landscape but also allows significant construction costs by 25%, primarily due to the high efficiency of the materials used.

Airloom Energy is currently constructing a pilot facility in Wyoming and plans to launch the project next summer fully.

Neal Rickner, CEO of Airloom Energy, highlighted the growing global demand for renewable energy, noting that the company’s wind power technology provides a groundbreaking solution to supply chain challenges while driving down costs.
