In 2004, the automotive world was surprised to discover a rare and unique Porsche model that continues to intrigue collectors and enthusiasts alike. Porsche’s bespoke customization service allows clients to create vehicles that reflect their personal tastes, but every so often, a one-of-a-kind car emerges that truly exceeds expectations. One example is the Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet, a rare creation that has intrigued Porsche fans for nearly two decades.

This special model, a 1998 Porsche 911 Carrera S coupe converted into a cabriolet, was showcased at Tennessee’s Chattanooga Motor Car Festival. It is particularly striking because the 993 Carrera S was never offered in a cabriolet version, making it a true rarity.

A Collector’s Vision Realized Through Porsche’s Bold Decision

The story behind this 911 Carrera S Cabriolet is as remarkable as the car itself. German Porsche collector Harald Otto Kahlenberg personally ordered the vehicle. At first, Porsche rejected Kahlenberg’s request for a convertible version of the 911 Carrera S, but his persistence ultimately led to the automaker’s change of heart. The result was a one-off Porsche that combined the renowned driving performance of the Carrera S with the open-air experience Kahlenberg longed for.

This model is a testament to Kahlenberg’s passion for Porsche and his desire to push the boundaries of the brand’s capabilities. This rare gem would never have existed without his deep pockets and love for the marque.

A Unique American Connection: The Beverly Hills Influence

In the late 1990s, five 911 Carrera S Cabriolets were sold in Beverly Hills, USA. However, these cars were not factory-made by Porsche but modified by an external company, so Porsche never officially recognized them as genuine models.

In stark contrast, Kahlenberg’s 911 Carrera S Cabriolet is a true rarity. Built on a Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet produced at the company’s headquarters in Zuffenhausen, this model underwent official modifications by Porsche’s Exclusive Workshop. This distinction makes it one of the most unique 911s ever produced.

Certified Rarity: A True One-Off Porsche

Kahlenberg’s one-of-a-kind 911 Carrera S Cabriolet has been rigorously inspected by the German TÜV (Technical Inspection Association) and comes with official certification documents from Porsche itself. This certifies the car as an original, factory-modified Carrera S Cabriolet, setting it apart from mere aftermarket conversions.

Few vehicles in the Porsche world boast such rarity. This 911 Carrera S Cabriolet is not just a car but a symbol of Porsche enthusiasts’ passion and dedication. Even 20 years after its creation, this masterpiece continues to garner attention, and rightfully so. It is an automotive icon—a reminder of the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship, performance, and individuality.
