Apple offers substantial discounts of up to 500 yuan ($68) on its latest iPhone models in China, responding to growing competition from domestic rivals like Huawei.

According to Apple’s website on Wednesday, the promotion runs from January 4 to 7 and applies to various iPhone models when purchased using specific payment methods.

The flagship iPhone 16 Pro, priced at 7,999 yuan ($1,091), and the iPhone 16 Pro Max, starting at 9,999 yuan ($1,364), are eligible for the maximum discount of 500 yuan ($68). The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will receive price reductions of 400 yuan ($54).

Apple’s promotion extends beyond new iPhones, with discounts of 200 to 300 yuan ($27 to $41) available on older iPhone models, MacBook laptops, and iPad tablets.

Customers must use designated payment methods such as WeChat Pay or Alipay to take advantage of these discounts.

This aggressive pricing strategy comes as China faces economic headwinds. Last November, consumer prices experienced their lowest growth rate in five months, reflecting a broader economic slowdown and deflationary pressures.

Huawei has reemerged as a formidable competitor. In August 2023, it returned to the premium segment with domestically produced chipsets.

Huawei recently slashed prices on various high-end devices, including smartphones, by up to 3,000 yuan ($409) on a major Chinese e-commerce platform.

Apple faces declining market share in China, the world’s largest smartphone market.

Research firm IDC reports that Apple’s smartphone sales in China dipped 0.3% year-over-year in the third quarter, while Huawei saw a dramatic 42% surge in sales.
