inews24 Views

A woman in her 40s has been sentenced to prison for posing as a businesswoman on a dating app and approaching men to extort billions of Korean won (millions of U.S. dollars).

On the 13th, According to legal sources, the Ulsan District Court Criminal Division 6 (Judge Choi Hee Dong) sentenced a woman in her 40s to three years in prison on charges of fraud.

This woman was charged with stealing a total of approximately KRW 670 million (approximately $470,000) from three male victims in their 30s, 40s, and 50s from September 2018 to October of last year.

At the time, she pretended to be a businesswoman in the art industry and approached these men through a dating app. She deceived them by claiming she needed to borrow money and said, “I don’t have money to pay for materials or food for employees right now because my money is tied up. I’ll pay for the expenses at the end of the month.”

She manipulated the men by dating them as if they were lovers and claimed, “My ex-boyfriend won’t break up with me unless I give the money back that I borrowed from him. I want to pay off the debt quickly and continue my romantic relationship with you.”

To deceive the men, she played a double role and even made it look like her ex-boyfriend had sent her text messages about money. According to the police, she committed the crime after gaining the victims’ trust by giving them luxury watches and golf clubs as gifts and traveling abroad with them.

The court stated its reasons for the sentence, saying, “She committed the same crime during her probation period after being sentenced to prison for a similar crime, and also has not been forgiven by the victims.”
