Boy shot while wrestling with an officer…

At 10 PM EST on June 28, Utica police attempted to stop two teenagers suspected of an alleged armed robbery. One of the boys fled while pointing what appeared to be a gun at the police, prompting the police to open fire.

The released bodycam footage showed police officers running toward the boy while shouting, “It’s a gun.” While one officer was wrestling with the boy, another opened fire.

The gun the boy was holding was a GLOCK 17 Gen5 replica gun

The boy reportedly was holding a replica of a GLOCK 17 Gen5 pellet gun, which the spokesperson for the Utica police explained, “The mock gun looked similar that it was difficult to distinguish from the real one.”

The victim was identified as Nyah Mway, who attended a middle school as an 8th grader in Utica. He was a Karen refugee from Myanmar, known to have migrated to the U.S. after the military coup in 2021.
