Dominique Pélicot, facing charges of sexually abusing his wife over ten years, allegedly recruited strangers from online chat rooms to carry out these assaults. He is accused of lacing his wife’s dinner and wine with a mix of sleeping pills and antidepressants, rendering her unconscious during the attacks.

The Daily Mail reported that the victim, his wife, took 450 sleeping pills in just one year. Additionally, she received such heavy doses of sedatives over several years that she remained unaware of the sexual assaults.

Police revealed that the victim was administered drug dosages high enough to induce a comatose state nearly.

The case unraveled when Pélicot was caught by a security guard filming under women’s skirts at a local supermarket on November 2, 2020, leading to his arrest. A subsequent search of his computer revealed a folder labeled “Abuse” on a USB drive, containing 20,000 photos and videos showing his wife being assaulted over 100 times.

The 50 men on trial alongside him include a local councillor, nurses, journalists, a former police officer, a correctional officer, a soldier, a firefighter, and a civil servant, who were aged between 26 and 73 at the time of their arrest.

As the trial commenced, protesters clad in black converged outside the courthouse, demanding severe penalties for the perpetrators.
