A German couple has been arrested after allegedly murdering a Ukrainian refugee mother and kidnapping her baby, a crime that has shocked the public.

According to DW, during a court hearing on Tuesday at the Mannheim District Court in Germany, the couple admitted to all charges related to the murder of the Ukrainian refugee mother and the kidnapping of her child, which occurred in March of the previous year. They also expressed remorse and apologized for their actions.

The crime unfolded in the southwestern German town of Sandhausen last March. The couple, who had been unable to conceive a child, planned to abduct a baby. Their target was a Ukrainian refugee woman who had fled the war in her home country and had sought refuge in Germany.

The couple joined a Telegram group offering assistance to newly arrived Ukrainian refugees and made contact with the victim, a 27-year-old woman who had requested help with translation before giving birth.

After the woman safely delivered her baby, the couple invited her and her mother to dinner at a restaurant in Sandhausen. Following the meal, they suggested going for a walk and offered the mother a glass of orange juice laced with a sedative.

When the mother began to feel unwell, the couple brutally attacked her, beating her to death with a stick in the woods. They then disposed of her body in a nearby lake.

They lied to the victim, claiming that her mother had suffered a heart attack and was hospitalized. The couple deceived the victim into getting into their car under the pretense of taking her to the hospital, where they then killed her as well. To cover their tracks, they doused her body with gasoline and set it on fire.

The couple took the baby back to their home, but their crime was soon uncovered when the partially burned body of the victim was found. Two weeks later, police divers discovered the body of her mother.

Investigations revealed that the couple had been planning the crime for months. They shared their intention to have a child with acquaintances and collected photos of newborn girls and parents’ personal information through hospital websites. After the murders, they discussed giving the kidnapped baby a new name and even considered breastfeeding her.

The couple admitted to all charges at their first court appearance and expressed deep regret. “I can’t understand how I did such a thing,” they said. “We await the appropriate punishment. We find ourselves disgusting.”

Meanwhile, the kidnapped baby has since been returned to Ukraine and is now living with her aunt.
