Swimmer Hwang Sun-woo has surpassed Park Tae-hwan to achieve a first-time feat.

On the 19th, Hwang Sun-woo competed in the men’s 400m mixed relay final at the ‘104th National Sports Festival’ and won the gold medal with a new record of 3 minutes and 36.50 seconds.

With this, Hwang Sun-woo competed in five events, including the men’s general swimming 800m on the 15th, freestyle 200m on the 16th, relay 400m on the 17th, and freestyle 100m on the 18th, winning gold medals in all events and becoming the five-time champion of the tournament.

Despite losing about 11 pounds in two days due to food poisoning symptoms from eating bad food the day before the opening, Hwang Sun-woo still delivered a top-notch performance.

In addition, Hwang Sun-woo received 57 out of 63 votes in the 104th Jeonnam National Sports Festival MVP press corps vote in 2023, earning him the title of tournament MVP.

Hwang Sun-woo has been named the National Sports Festival MNP for three consecutive years. This is the first time a player has received the MVP

three times in a row since the MVP was first selected in 1980.

Only two athletes have won the MVP two years in a row – weightlifter Kim Tae-hyun (1998-1999) and swimmer Park Tae-hwan (2007-2008).

After being selected as the MVP, Hwang Sun-woo said, “It’s a significant award. I feel proud and satisfied as a swimmer who has made a mark.”

He added, “I have always admired and thought highly of Park Tae-hwan. Saying that I have surpassed him is an exaggeration.”
