Boston Red Sox’s Lucas Giolito Facing Season-Threatening Elbow Injur

The prestigious American Major League Baseball (MLB) team, the Boston Red Sox, has encountered a significant setback ahead of the season opener.

ESPN reported on the 6th that Lucas Giolito (29), whom Boston had designated as the starting pitcher for the opening game, is now at risk of missing the entire season due to an injury.

Boston recruited Giolito, a free agent (FA), for 38.5 million dollars over two years last winter.

However, recent medical examinations revealed that Giolito had suffered some damage to the ligament in his right elbow, along with a sprain.

If he undergoes elbow surgery, it would be challenging for him to return to the pitching position this year and next year, which is the last year of his contract. This could mean that Boston might lose the entire salary paid to the FA.

Having debuted in Major League Baseball with the Washington Nationals in 2016, Giolito played a vital role as an ace after joining the Chicago White Sox in 2017.

His career record was over eight Major League seasons, and he amassed 61 wins and 62 losses, with an average earned run average of 4.43.

Last year, he fell into a slump and was consecutively traded to the Los Angeles Angels and the Cleveland Guardians.

Last winter, Boston strategically recruited Giolito, known for his consistency, after trading their often-injured ace Chris Sale to the Atlanta Braves. However, an unexpected elbow injury is expected to cause significant disruption to the season.
