The panda Shuang Shuang at Japan’s Kobe Oji Zoo

The panda Shuang Shuang (female, born in September 1995) at Japan’s Kobe Oji Zoo passed away on the 31st of last month after suffering from severe heart failure (the most serious level of heart disease) for several years.

The Panda Cooperation Agreement between China and the Kobe Government of Japan has expired. However, due to COVID-19, Shuang Shuang’s return to China has been postponed twice, now scheduled for 2021.

Shuang Shuang, a panda, was diagnosed with geriatric heart disease during a regular check-up in March 2021. As a result, China and Japan formed a team of specialists to conduct joint diagnosis, treatment, and meticulous care. Although Shuang Shuang’s heart disease has improved, both countries have postponed her return schedule to avoid worsening the condition due to long-distance transportation.

Shuang Shuang’s condition has worsened this year; she began to refuse to eat, and at times, she refused to drink water and showed signs of convulsions. The experts implemented all necessary rescue measures, but sadly, she passed away. Meanwhile, a 29-year-old panda is equivalent to a 100-year-old human, which is very long-lived.
