Boston Dynamics, a subsidiary of the Hyundai Motor Group, has unveiled its electric Atlas robot. This new version offers more fluid movement than its recently retired hydraulic predecessor. In collaboration with Hyundai, they plan to test and commercialize the robot.

Boston Dynamics revealed the fully electric Atlas robot on the 17th (local time). The new Atlas is an electric robot, a step up from the previous hydraulic model. It is designed to perform various actions for practical use in real-world scenarios. It can mimic the movements of the hydraulic Atlas, such as lifting and moving heavy objects, and perform a few modified actions tailored to customer needs.

Boston Dynamics plans to test the electric Atlas in Hyundai’s factories. The company stated, “The Hyundai Motor team is building next-generation automotive manufacturing capabilities and will be a perfect testing ground for Atlas applications. We are excited to show the world what the most dynamic humanoid robot can do in labs, factories, and our daily lives in the coming months and years.”

Boston Dynamics also released a 31-second video introducing the electric Atlas. In the video, the Atlas, lying on the floor, gets up by bending its legs backward and pushing off the floor. It rotates its torso and walks freely towards the camera.

Boston Dynamics emphasized, “Atlas will move in ways that surpass human capabilities. We are confident it will become a robot with unique abilities to handle tedious, dirty, and dangerous tasks in real-world applications.”

With Boston Dynamics introducing the new robot, competition with Tesla is expected to intensify. Tesla unveiled its humanoid robot Optimus in 2021 and released its second-generation robot last year.
