Tesla Copycat? China’s Dongfeng Unveils Electric Pickup Very Similar to Cybertruck

Daniel Kim Views

China’s Dongfeng was at the center of controversy when it unveiled a pure electric concept car reminiscent of the Tesla Cybertruck.

In particular, the interior and exterior of the Dongfeng pickup truck are reminiscent of the Tesla Cybertruck.

According to foreign media such as the British Daily Mail, Dongfeng Motor Company first unveiled a silver-body concept car as a pickup truck at the 2024 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition held in April 2024.

At first glance, the pickup reminds us of the unique design of the Cybertruck. The Tesla Cybertruck has received global attention for its sturdiness and geometric, straight-line design.

Dongfeng’s new concept truck is reminiscent of a stumpy cybertruck, which seems to have removed sharp edges. It is similar inside and out, from the steep slope from the windshield to the bonnet to the characteristic headlights, cargo bed, and square steering wheel. Dongfeng has not revealed important details about the new electric pickup, such as battery, performance, and driving range. However, it is claimed to be an electric platform-based vehicle with a 1,305 horsepower powertrain, superior to the 845 horsepower Cybertruck.

As for Actual Launch…

Dongfeng’s latest concept car features a round and smooth design, unlike the Tesla Cybertruck. The material is also not stainless steel.

The front end has a light bar for daytime running lights, and the headlights are just below the thick black bumper. The skid plate and closed lines hint at the presence of a front trunk. The side window design is reminiscent of the Volkswagen electric vehicle ID. Buzz.

The rear part is equipped with typical taillights found on commercial vans. There is an attempt to differentiate it from the Cybertruck by applying a split open tailgate. However, the tent included with the vehicle is similar to the Cybertent already introduced by Tesla.

Dongfeng is a Chinese state-owned automobile manufacturer and is considered one of China’s top three, along with FAW and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC). In particular, Dongfeng is the No. 1 manufacturer in the truck field in China.

It is unclear whether the concept vehicle will be launched on the market. According to foreign media, although Tesla’s share of the Chinese automobile market fell to 6.7% in the fourth quarter of 2023, the Chinese market is still Tesla’s main sales region. Therefore, it seems difficult to launch a vehicle similar to the Cybertruck.
