The South Korean Presidential Office announced Wednesday that it aims to seize the opportunity presented by the NATO summit to host a bilateral summit with the United States.

“The White House and the Blue House (South Korean Presidential Office) have a shared understanding of the need to meet and talk as soon as possible,” said Kim Tae Hyo, the first deputy director of the National Security Officer (NSO) in a briefing held at the Washington D.C earlier on Thursday.

At present, the two countries are pursuing a separate official summit.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine in the afternoon of the same day.

A high-ranking official from the Presidential Office informed reporters that President Zelenskyy would have an opportunity to speak with their President, either at the dinner scheduled for that evening or during the multilateral meeting the following day. The official further noted that the support package for Ukraine has become quite comprehensive and has expanded significantly over the past three years. He added that NATO and allied countries, including the United States, highly value South Korea’s support for Ukraine.

“We will provide support that is needed by the Ukrainian people and Ukraine, and in a way that anyone can see is a logical extension of our support.”

In light of this, Yoon and Zelenskyy are expected to meet and discuss South Korea’s support for Ukraine in the face of growing military cooperation between Russia and North Korea.
