Amidst the controversy surrounding the leak of top-secret military information, including the identities of North Korean agents, News1 reported a 20-year-old Chinese individual was arrested after attempting to photograph an army aircraft at Gimhae International Airport secretly.

The Busan Police Agency is investigating the 20-year-old Chinese individual for his actions, who tried to illegally photograph an army aircraft using a camera around 1 PM KST the previous day near Gimhae International Airport in Gangseo District, Busan.

The police are verifying the Chinese individual’s entry date and travel route to determine if he has previously photographed security facilities in other areas and whether there are any indications of espionage.

The suspect could face Military Base and Military Facility Protection Act charges. This law prohibits photographing military bases or facilities. Violators may face up to three years in prison or fines of up to 3 million won (approximately $2,250).

The Military Base and Military Facility Protection Act was established to protect military bases and facilities and ensure the smooth execution of military operations. It states that trespassing or causing damage to protected areas can result in sentences of one year or more in prison. Acts that cause damage to military bases or facilities can result in sentences of three years or more. There are fines of up to ₩3 million (approximately $2,250) or three years in prison for photographing, drawing, recording, surveying, or publishing documents or books related to military bases or facilities within controlled protection zones.

On June 25, three Chinese students were arrested by the police for using a drone to photograph the Naval Operations Command Base in Busan. The group was charged with violating the Military Base and Military Facility Protection Act after they filmed the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71, a 100,000-ton aircraft carrier) docked at the base. They claimed they were merely curious.
