Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski stated on Tuesday that Poland and its allies had received information pointing to Russian involvement in attempted sabotage, prompting the closure of one of the three Russian consulates in the country.

The decision follows the arrest of a 51-year-old Ukrainian man in Wrocław in January. The man, who had been planning acts of arson, admitted to working under the direction of Russian agents. He revealed that around 20 individuals are currently under investigation for sabotage in Poland, with authorities aware of arson plots targeting allied nations.

The consulate in Poznań is set to close soon, and its staff will be declared persona non grata. Earlier in May, the Polish Foreign Ministry restricted the movement of Russian diplomats in response to similar sabotage attempts.

In response to Poland’s actions, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova warned in a statement sent to state-run media RIA Novosti that Russia would retaliate in a “painful response” to this recent hostile action.
