South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff announced at 4:22 AM on Tuesday that troops deployed under martial law have been returned to their original units.
They emphasized, “No unusual activities have been detected from North Korea, and our vigilance towards the North remains at normal levels.”
Moments before this announcement, President Yoon Suk Yeol stated in an address, “I have ordered the withdrawal of military forces deployed for martial law duties,” adding that he would lift the state of martial law through a cabinet meeting. The martial law command established within the military was subsequently disbanded following Yoon’s address.
Yoon explained, “At 11 PM last night, I declared a state of emergency to counter anti-state forces threatening to paralyze essential government functions and undermine our liberal democratic constitutional order. However, in response to the National Assembly’s demand to lift martial law, I have ordered the withdrawal of troops assigned to martial law duties. I will convene a cabinet meeting to formally lift the state of martial law, as requested by the Assembly.”
