The United States has successfully conducted a mid-range ballistic missile interception test in Guam, a strategic stronghold in the Western Pacific.

The U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA), in collaboration with the Department of Defense, announced that it successfully intercepted an air-launched medium-range ballistic missile target over the waters near Guam on Tuesday. The MDA confirmed this was the first ballistic missile defense test conducted from the island.

Guam, a U.S. territory, is a critical Western Pacific outpost for American military assets, including strategic bombers and nuclear-powered submarines. It is also significant in countering potential threats from China and North Korea.

During heightened tensions between North Korea and the U.S. under the Trump administration in 2017, Pyongyang ramped up its rhetoric by declaring plans to perfect a “ring of fire” around Guam using its Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missiles.
