Rainy Day Dilemma: Are Crocs the New Office Footwear?

Daniel Kim Views

Commuters head to work through heavy rain and thunderstorms in Mapo-gu, Seoul, on July 17. (Yonhap)Splash! The recent downpour across the country has sparked more than just puddles – it’s ignited a heated debate about what’s appropriate to wear to the office when the skies open up. A recent online post from a drenched commuter who dared to don sandals to work has set social media ablaze, according to Monday’s online chatter.

The post, penned by a self-described newbie at his company, spilled the tea on some colleagues who braved the deluge in rubber sandals and Crocs.

Plot twist: Even though these rain warriors swapped their soggy footwear for prim office slippers once inside, they still got a stern talking-to from the boss for looking unprofessional.

Our rookie poster admitted to toying with the idea of joining the Crocs crew to save his sneakers from becoming swamps. But, being the new kid on the block and wanting to dodge any drama, he played it safe. He packed his comfy clogs in his bag, only slipping them on for the journey home.

Championing the cause for sensible rainy day footwear, he posed the million-dollar question to fellow netizens: “Wouldn’t rocking Crocs beat sitting in a cloud of eau de wet sock all day?”

The internet, predictably, couldn’t make up its mind.

Some users were all for ditching stuffy dress codes when Mother Nature throws a tantrum.

“When it’s raining cats and dogs out there, getting to work is like surviving ‘The Hunger Games.’ Wearing Crocs? No biggie. It’s not an everyday thing. And let’s be real, who wants to be desk buddies with someone whose feet are basically marinating?” one commenter quipped.

What’s the big deal about wearing them on the commute? As long as you’re crushing it at your job, why sweat the small stuff?”

But not everyone was ready to let comfort rain supreme over professionalism.

“Give an inch, they’ll take a mile,” warned one naysayer. “Let a couple of people slide with Crocs, and before you know it, the whole office will look like a beach party. What kind of message does that send to clients and partners?”

Another stuck-in-the-mud added, “Even wearing slippers inside the office is pushing it. Your workplace isn’t your living room – dressing the part is part of the job description.”

Meanwhile, Mother Nature isn’t just stirring up fashion debates. The recent torrential rains and landslides that kicked off on July 16 have tragically claimed 18 lives, with nine people still missing as of Sunday night, according to the Ministry of Interior and Safety.

While the rain has taken a breather, the Korea Meteorological Administration warns that most of the country is in for a steamy few days ahead. Expect daytime highs to feel like a sweltering 33 degrees Celsius, with some areas bracing for tropical nights. Looks like we might be trading in our rain boots for flip-flops after all!
