Why Do Remarriages Often Fail? Divorced Men’s Dilemma with High Expectations

inews24 Views

More than three out of every ten divorced men believe their remarriage could also end in disaster due to their excessive expectations.

Only-U, a company specializing in remarriage information, and the marriage information company Bienarae conducted a survey from the 4th to the 9th of this month, asking 508 divorced men and women (254 each) nationwide about the fundamental reasons why remarriage may also lead to divorce. 31.5% of the men responded that ‘expectations are too high.’

The other reasons were ‘too many obstacles’ (25.2%), ‘not being innocent’ (21.3%), and ‘giving up too easily’ (16.1%).

In the case of women, the highest percentage, 33.1%, responded ‘too many obstacles,’ followed by ‘deciding to remarry rashly’ (25.1%), ‘not being innocent’ (19.3%), and ‘giving up too easily’ (14.2%).

Son Dong-gyu, the representative of Only-U, advised, “Divorcees who have experienced a failed first marriage have no choice but to be cautious when remarrying, but they should not overlook the fact that there are limitations in their choices.” He added, “Choosing the best partner is important, but it is also crucial to learn from the lessons of the failed first marriage and strive to understand and harmonize with each other.”

In response to the question about the ‘biggest threat to a successful remarriage,’ 34.3% of women listed ‘economic hardship’ as the top concern.

The second highest concern was ‘over-involvement with biological children’ (26.0%), followed by ‘stinginess with money’ (22.0%) and ‘compensation psychology for first marriage failure’ (12.6%).

On the other hand, men listed ‘compensation psychology for first marriage failure’ as the top concern with 31.1%, followed by ‘over-involvement with biological children’ (25.2%), ‘freeloading off the partner’s property’ (22.8%), and ‘economic hardship’ (14.6%).

An official from Only-U explained, “Many divorced women hope to be compensated and healed from their difficult and painful lives during their first marriage through remarriage, which can be disconcerting for men.” He added, “Most men have divided nearly half of their property with their ex-spouses at the time of divorce, so from the perspective of women considering remarriage, they may not feel economically satisfied.”
