What season do solo travelers prefer the most during the year?
According to an analysis of check-in data by Tripvitos, solo travelers tend to travel more frequently in winter than in summer. Tripvitos found that the frequency of solo accommodations in winter (November to January) was about 15% higher than in summer (June to August).
This is thought to be due to the ability to enjoy tourist spots leisurely and attractions during the off-peak travel season. Moreover, unlike the summer, when people usually go on vacation with family and friends, many people plan solo winter trips to use up their remaining annual leave.
According to Shifti, an integrated human resources (HR) solution operator, the month employees spend most vacation time is December. The number of vacation registrations in December 2022 accounted for 13.1% of the total registered vacations.
The most popular domestic region for solo travelers in winter was Jeju City in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. This was followed by:
▲Gangnam-gu, Seoul
▲Jung-gu, Seoul
▲Seogwipo City, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province
▲Haeundae-gu, Busan.
The demand for 4-star- or 2-star business hotels was higher than that for 5-star hotels.
Where did most solo travelers go abroad in the winter? Japan took the top spot due to the yen phenomenon and short flight distance, which makes it less burdensome for solo travelers. The Americas and Europe followed, including the United States, Spain, the United Kingdom, and France, which are relatively far away.
A Tripvitos official said, “As the end of the year approaches, it seems that the demand for solo travel or staycations to reflect on the year has increased.” They also advised, “When planning a solo trip, it’s good to communicate with other users and gather various information before booking accommodations or going on the trip.”
