On June 10, a massive sculpture aimed at raising awareness about endangered animals was installed in the Financial District of Manhattan, New York.
According to media outlets such as Time Out, the artist duo Gillie and Marc Schattner are showcasing their new work, “Wild Couch Party,” on 28 Liberty Street in Manhattan’s Financial District until May 28 of next year.
“Wild Couch Party” is a large statue featuring 10 endangered animals lounging on a sofa. The sculpture features 12 endangered animals such as hippos, elephants, Masai giraffes, Bengal tigers, koalas, and chimpanzees, all anthropomorphized and depicted engaging in conversation while holding teacups or crossing their legs.
Gillie and Marc stated, “The anthropomorphized animals in the artwork serve as our alter egos and advocates for wildlife conservation. We hope that people will interact with the animals in the artwork and learn about wildlife protection.”
The duo plans to unveil three additional pieces with a similar theme in downtown Manhattan. Notably, the piece “Friends Forever Bench,” featuring animals sitting on a bench, offers a real-life experience for people to sit among the animals and engage in conversation.
