Is Your Dog Depressed? 1 in 4 Might Be Suffering – Here’s What to Watch For

daily Views

Depression, often referred to as a cold of the mind among modern people, is something that can also affect dogs. Even dogs known for their cheerful and active demeanor can develop depression if they experience physical ailments or prolonged periods of being alone. However, many pet owners are unaware of canine depression, making it difficult for them to recognize the changes associated with it or understand how to cope with it. Therefore, let’s explore the symptoms, causes, and ways to overcome canine depression.

Symptoms of Dog Depression?

Clinically, depression in dogs is defined by behaviors such as spending most of their time lying down without interacting with family, showing indifference to their surroundings, and exhibiting little or no interest in eating. If a dog loses interest in activities they used to enjoy, dislikes going for walks, seems reluctant to move, appears lethargic and disinterested most of the time, or experiences a decrease in appetite, these could all be signs of depression.

What Causes Depression?

Environmental Factors

The causes of depression vary. Dogs are habitual animals who prefer routine and dislike change. Therefore, any change in their environment can trigger anxiety, which can eventually lead to depression. Causes of depression in dogs include the death of a companion animal, the owner’s depressed state, the addition of new family members, and aging.

Health Conditions

Depressive symptoms can also occur in dogs that are not in good health. For example, if depressive behaviors suddenly appear, it’s essential to consider potential health issues like acute infections, hypoglycemia, or poisoning. If the dog exhibits signs of depression for an extended period, it’s prudent to investigate chronic conditions like arthritis, pancreatitis, kidney failure, or cancer. Therefore, if the depression symptoms do not appear to stem from environmental changes or persist for more than a week, it’s advisable to consult a veterinarian for a thorough health check-up.

What Should Pet Owners Be Aware Of?

Pet owners should also be mindful. Dogs can sense their owners’ moods and the atmosphere at home. The dog can also pick up on that mood if the owner feels down. A tense household can make dogs anxious. Maintaining a happy and positive mindset is good for people but also benefits dogs. It’s not advisable to display crying too often in front of your pet. When dogs see their guardians crying, they usually want to comfort them.

One in Four Dogs Suffers from Depression

A British daily newspaper once reported a study that found “one in four pet dogs left alone at home suffers from depression.” Given South Korea’s longer working hours compared to developed countries, our pets spend more time alone at home, increasing their risk of developing depression. When you return home today, carefully observe your pet for any unusual signs and take steps to prevent and alleviate depression.

Allow More Sunlight Exposure

To help your dog get more sunlight, pull back curtains and blinds. Placing their bed, house, or playpen by a window is also a good idea. If natural sunlight is insufficient, you can use artificial lamps designed to mimic natural sunlight. Typically, exposing them for around 45 minutes a day is sufficient.

‘Take Them for Walks

Walking your dog brings numerous benefits. Firstly, during walks, they encounter various smells and sounds not found indoors, which provide positive stimulation. Additionally, direct exposure to sunlight is optimal because windows can filter out certain wavelengths. Even on cold days, regular walks during times with ample sunlight are ideal. However, it’s crucial to consider your dog’s health when adjusting the duration and intensity of these walks.

Help Them Be More Active During the Day

To ensure your dog stays active during the day, engage them in basic etiquette training such as sitting, lying down, waiting, or interactive play like fetch with the owner. However, playing with the owner may not suffice. Consider hiding food or treats in different spots for them to discover or utilizing interactive toys that dispense food during playtime.

Consistently Feed Them Probiotics

Serotonin, which helps reduce feelings of depression, is produced by intestinal bacteria in the human body, accounting for over 95%. When probiotics, which are nutrients that feed these bacteria, are consumed regularly with prebiotics, they improve mood, enhance gut health, boost immunity, and reduce allergies. Furthermore, serotonin plays a role in regulating excessive appetite caused by stress, aiding in weight loss.

Help Them Sleep Well

The average dog’s sleep time is 12 hours, comparable to the importance of a good night’s sleep for humans. To ensure dogs sleep comfortably, create a quiet environment and dim the lights at night. It’s advisable to reserve their regular sleeping spots, such as cushions or dog houses, specifically for nighttime use.
