A man died after attempting to swallow a live chick in India.
Last week, several Indian media, including the Hindustan Times and India Today, reported that 35-year-old Anand Kumar Yadav from the central state of Chhattisgarh collapsed at home and was rushed to a nearby university hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Family members revealed that Anand had felt dizzy and fainted after taking a bath on December 14. To determine the cause of death, medical staff performed an autopsy.
During the examination, a chick was found in Anand’s airway. The chick measured approximately 20 centimeters (8 inches) in length. The medical staff concluded that the chick had blocked both Anand’s airway and esophagus, resulting in asphyxiation.
Dr. Santu Bag, who performed the autopsy, expressed shock at the discovery. Having conducted over 15,000 autopsies in his career, he said this was the first time he had encountered such a case, calling it “unbelievable.”
Residents speculated that Anand, who had been married for over five years without a child, might have swallowed the live chick as part of a superstitious ritual recommended by a local shaman.
However, the bereaved family stated they were unaware of Anand’s practice of such superstitions and did not know when or where he obtained the chick.
Local law enforcement has initiated an investigation to uncover the precise circumstances surrounding Anand’s death.
