Why Messi Chose MLS Over $1.7 Billion Saudi Contract

wikitree Views

Lionel Messi reportedly received an offer exceeding $1.7 billion.

On the 16th, numerous international soccer outlets, including SportBible, reported that Messi declined a $1.7 billion offer from Saudi Arabia as he transitioned to Major League Soccer in the United States.

Anmar Al Haili, the president of the Saudi Arabian Pro League and Al Hilal Club, stated through the media, “We actually contacted Messi at the end of his contract in Paris. We presented him with an offer of €1.4 billion, but the player refused because his family wanted America. It is surprising that the player was able to refuse such a huge offer for the sake of his family. He managed to convince his family, but he did not hesitate to refuse. We respect this because family is more important than money.”

This astronomical offer is comparable to the first-quarter profit of Samsung’s semiconductor division.

Messi concluded his two-year contract with PSG last June. Despite his impressive performance last season, with 21 goals and 20 assists, head coach Christophe Galtier announced he wouldn’t extend the contract. Rumors circulated that Messi might move to the Saudi Arabian Pro League. However, Messi chose the United States. He signed a two-year contract with Inter Miami, a Major League Soccer team owned by David Beckham.

He now receives a salary of $50 million to $60 million at Inter Miami, including advertising revenue and performance bonuses.

Messi has additional earnings through his partnerships with Apple and Adidas. Apple TV+ has a revenue-sharing contract with Messi, which streams MLS games, and Adidas sponsors Messi as he grows globally. All of these earnings give Messi annual revenues of about $100 million. Considering Messi is not as active.
