Knocked Out of the Ring: Ryan Garcia Expelled by WBC for Discriminatory Comments

Daniel Kim Views

Ryan Garcia (25, USA), emerging as a star poised to lead the boxing world with his good looks and powerful punches, has been expelled from the World Boxing Council (WBC) due to racist remarks.

Yonhap News

According to USA Today, WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán announced Garcia’s expulsion on Sunday. Garcia repeatedly used racial terms on social media and criticized George Floyd, a black man who died from excessive police action in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2020.

“Exercising my authority as president of the WBC, I am hereby expelling Ryan Garcia from any activity with our organization,” Sulaiman wrote on X. “We reject any form of discrimination. I fear for Ryan’s well-being as he has declined multiple attempts for our help with mental health and substance abuse.”

Garcia’s boxing career peaked during the WBC super lightweight match on April 21. At the time, Garcia defeated Devin Haney (25, USA), the WBC super lightweight champion, by a decision of 2-0, contrary to many people’s expectations. Garcia’s fall from stardom was swift. Right after the match with Haney, he tested positive for the banned substance Ostarine and received a one-year suspension from the New York State Athletic Commission. In June, he was also arrested for damaging a hotel room and hallway in Beverly Hills, LA. Garcia later apologized, saying, “Also, I was trolling. I want all the killing to stop. Humanity needs to stop killing people. I love everyone. Sorry if I offended you.”
