The PGA Tour’s 2025 season starts with the Sentry Tournament of Champions, beginning January 3 at the Plantation Course (par 73) in Kapalua, Hawaii.

This year’s tournament is drawing extra attention due to the absence of Jordan Spieth, often referred to as the Golden Boy of golf, and the unexpected appearance of his longtime caddie, Michael Greller, who will carry the bag for a different player.

Greller has been by Spieth’s side since the golfer turned professional. Originally a math teacher, Greller transitioned to full-time caddying when Spieth joined the PGA Tour. He has been there for every major milestone in Spieth’s career, including his first win at the 2013 John Deere Classic, three major championships, 13 career victories, and his rise to the World No. 1 ranking.

While player-caddie partnerships are often subject to change on the PGA Tour, the bond between Spieth and Greller has remained remarkably stable. Spieth has never switched caddies throughout his entire career.

The Sentry Tournament of Champions is exclusive to the winners of PGA Tour events from the previous season and the top 50 players in the FedEx Cup standings. Spieth, who failed to qualify, will not participate this year. However, in an interesting twist, Greller unexpectedly appeared at the event.

According to reports, Greller will temporarily replace Sean Martin, Max Homa’s caddie. Martin is on vacation but is expected to return in time for the American Express tournament, which begins on January 17.

Spieth has been concentrating on his recovery following nerve surgery on his left wrist last September. He recently stated that he is now pain-free and feels fully recovered, adding that he is managing his condition well and preparing for the new season. However, he has not yet disclosed which tournament he will enter as he returns to competitive action.
