There’s a growing trend of fearless vehicle thefts by teenagers. They typically look for unlocked cars on streets or parking lots late at night. The larger issue is that they often drive without a license, endangering other drivers and pedestrians.

Recently, a teen boy stole a 45-seater tour bus and caused an accident, raising controversy. Netizens were outraged when the bizarre reason for targeting the tour bus was revealed.

Two-hour long unlicensed driving spree

According to KBS News, on the 18th, the Incheon Seobu Police Station detained 16-year-old A for theft and unlicensed driving (violation of the Road Traffic Act). A, a minor, did not have a driver’s license. On the morning of the 5th, around 3:30 a.m., A entered a bus garage in Incheon where a bus was not locked and discovered an unlocked tour bus. He drove it out onto the road.

For about two hours, the unlicensed teen drove around. He only stopped after crashing into the side mirror of a dump truck parked about 30km (roughly 18.6 miles) from where he stole the bus. Eyewitnesses stated, “The tour bus hit a parked dump truck and then came to a halt.”

Committed the crime to show off on social media

But the boy didn’t just drive the bus; he picked up a friend to film his actions with a mobile phone. In an interview, he explained, “I wanted to post it on social media and show off. I just wanted to drive the bus, go as far as Yeongjong Island, and then return it.”

The police are currently investigating the boy for theft and driving without a license. His friend, who filmed the crime, is under investigation for abetting. The police are considering an arrest warrant, especially given the boy’s past unlicensed driving record.

More than 3,000 teenagers drive without a license every year

According to a police officer, nearly 3,000 teenagers are caught driving without a license every year, becoming a social issue. Netizens commented, “Stealing a tour bus is bold. Even if he’s underage, he should face legal consequences. If we keep letting them off, our families could be victims next.”

Meanwhile, a police official commented on teenagers driving without a license, saying, “They are curious and have a tendency towards criminal desires. Moreover, they often repeat their crimes due to competition with their friends and a hero complex.” It is known that every year, over 3,000 teenagers are caught driving without a license, raising social concerns.
