In March 2024, solar power generation in the United States produced 3.26 million MWh, surpassing the 2.96 million MWh produced by coal. This marks the first time that solar power has outperformed coal in Texas.

According to power generation data from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), coal’s market share has dropped below 10% for the first time in history, slightly exceeding 9%. This downward trend started a decade ago but accelerated after solar power first appeared in the power generation data in 2016-2017, according to the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA).

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) hourly power grid monitor, solar power generation reached 3.26 million MWh in March 2024. With this increase, the share of solar power in ERCOT’s power generation exceeded 10% for the first time in a month.

Texas ranks first in solar power generation capacity within the United States. In March 2024, the generation increased by 1.17 million MWh, a 56% increase compared to the previous month.

For the entire United States, coal’s share of power production was less than 15% every day in March. The market share of coal in Korea also fell to 11.25% on March 29, recording its lowest daily rate.
