Biden’s Game-Changing Bill: Billions for Ukraine, TikTok’s US Sale

inews24 Views

President Joe Biden has officially signed and enacted a bill that includes billions of dollars worth of arms support to Ukraine and the forced sale of TikTok, a Chinese video-sharing app, in the United States.

According to foreign media, including Reuters, on the 24th (local time), Biden said, “We will start sending equipment for ammunition, cannons, rocket systems, armored vehicles, and more to Ukraine within a few hours,” and “I will ensure transportation begins immediately.”

The bill includes a $61 billion (approximately 84 trillion KRW) arms support plan for Ukraine, a $26 billion (approximately 36 trillion KRW) support plan that includes military support for Israel and humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip, and an $8.1 billion (approximately 11 trillion KRW) support plan for Indo-Pacific security, including Taiwan.

Biden has been pressuring Congress to approve additional funds for Ukraine, which is fighting against a full-scale invasion by Russia. This is because Donald Trump, who is scheduled to compete in the November presidential election, is opposing aid to Ukraine. Also, some Republican lawmakers are questioning Ukraine’s victory and refusing support.

Fortunately, House Speaker Mike Johnson broke the deadlock over the bill. Biden said, “This reminds us of what America can do when we unite despite our differences.”

No specific mention was made about the forced sale of TikTok, which is included in the bill. The bill stipulates that if ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, does not sell its business in the United States within the next nine months to a year, distribution of TikTok on the U.S. app store will be blocked.
