The U.S. and Israeli leaders held a phone consultation on the 28th (Eastern Standard Time) and exchanged views on ceasefire negotiations and the ground war in Rafah.
The White House reported that President Joe Biden reaffirmed his ironclad commitment to Israel’s security to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the call. In addition, the two leaders discussed the issue of Rafah, and President Biden reaffirmed his clear stance on this matter, according to the White House.
The United States has long expressed concerns about significant casualties if Israel launches a large-scale ground attack in Rafah, the southernmost part of the Gaza Strip, because Rafah is home to more than 1 million Gaza Strip refugees.
The two leaders also reviewed ongoing negotiations regarding the release of hostages in the Gaza Strip and an immediate ceasefire and discussed expanding humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, the White House reported.
Meanwhile, Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian National Authority, earlier predicted that Israel would attack the southernmost city of the Gaza Strip, Rafah, within a few days, urging, “The United States should ask Israel not to attack Rafah. The United States is the only country that can prevent Israel’s criminal acts.”
